What students practice
Students locate rational numbers on horizontal and vertical number lines, then read and plot points in all four quadrants. One page uses halves. They use the signs to name the quadrant, change one sign or both, and find distances between points that share an x-coordinate or a y-coordinate. The last pages draw polygons from lists of vertices and measure the horizontal and vertical sides.
What's inside
- p. 3
Number Lines, Across and Up
Write the number at each lettered point, then plot and label the numbers in 4 and 5.
- p. 4
Read Points in All Four Quadrants
Write the ordered pair for each point on the grid.
- p. 5
Plot Points in All Four Quadrants
Plot and label each point on the grid.
- p. 6
Halves on the Coordinate Plane
Write the ordered pair for points A to D, then plot and label points E to H.
- p. 7
Signs Tell the Quadrant
Write the sign of each coordinate, then the quadrant, and answer 7 to 9.
- p. 8
Change the Signs
Change the signs as each problem says, write the new point, and plot it.
- p. 9
Distance on a Grid
Use absolute values to find each distance on the grid, then answer 5 to 7.
- p. 10
Maps and Game Boards
Plot the two points on the grid, then use their coordinates to find the distance.
- p. 11
Distance Code
Find each distance on the map, then use the code bank to spell a word.
- p. 12
Draw Polygons From Vertices
Plot the vertices, connect them in order, then find the side lengths.
- p. 13
Side Lengths Without a Grid
Use the coordinates to find each side length; a quick sketch can help.
- p. 14
Mixed Review
Solve each problem, then check your work.
Think: each tick is 0.5, so the point 3 ticks left of 0 is −1.5.
Georgia standards covered
6.PAR.8.1
Locate and position rational numbers on a horizontal or vertical number line; find and position pairs of integers and other rational numbers on a coordinate plane.
In this packet: pages 3 to 6 and 14. 6.PAR.8.1 practice in all our packets
6.PAR.8.2
Show and explain that signs of numbers in ordered pairs indicate locations in quadrants of the coordinate plane and determine how two ordered pairs may differ based only on the signs.
In this packet: pages 7, 8, and 14. 6.PAR.8.2 practice in all our packets
6.PAR.8.3
Solve problems by graphing points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane. Include use of coordinates and absolute value to find distances between points with the same x-coordinate or the same y-coordinate.
In this packet: pages 9 to 11 and 14. 6.PAR.8.3 practice in all our packets
6.PAR.8.4
Draw polygons in the coordinate plane given coordinates for the vertices; use coordinates to find the length of a side joining points with the same x-coordinate or the same y-coordinate.
In this packet: pages 12 to 14. 6.PAR.8.4 practice in all our packets
Who it's for
Grade 6 classes on graphing in all four quadrants. Grid points are integers except on the halves page. Distances are only horizontal or vertical, and nothing operates on a negative number.
