6.PAR.8.3 worksheets: distances on the coordinate plane

The standard

Solve problems by graphing points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane. Include use of coordinates and absolute value to find distances between points with the same x-coordinate or the same y-coordinate.

Element 6.PAR.8.3 of Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards (2021, effective SY2023-24), in the Patterning & Algebraic Reasoning strand. It sits under standard 6.PAR.8: Graph rational numbers as points on the coordinate plane to represent and solve contextual, mathematical problems; draw polygons using the coordinates for their vertices and find the length of a side of a polygon.

What students practice

Every distance item has a drawn grid. Students find the distance between points that share an x-coordinate or a y-coordinate, using absolute value: add when the points are on opposite sides of an axis, and subtract when they are on the same side. Maps and a game board use the same idea.

Where to find it

Grade 6 Coordinate Plane: All Four Quadrants

Pages 9 to 11 and 14 of 26 · $4

  • p. 9Distance on a Grid. Use absolute values to find each distance on the grid, then answer 5 to 7.
  • p. 10Maps and Game Boards. Plot the two points on the grid, then use their coordinates to find the distance.
  • p. 11Distance Code. Find each distance on the map, then use the code bank to spell a word.
  • p. 14Mixed Review. Solve each problem, then check your work.
