- p. 8Multiplication Galaxy: Break Apart. Break the second factor into two parts, multiply each part, then add.
Georgia Grade 3 math, Patterning & Algebraic Reasoning
Apply properties of operations (i.e., commutative property, associative property, distributive property) to multiply and divide within 100.
Element 3.PAR.3.3 of Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards (2021, effective SY2023-24), in the Patterning & Algebraic Reasoning strand. It sits under standard 3.PAR.3: Use part-whole strategies to solve real-life, mathematical problems involving multiplication and division with whole numbers within 100.
Students break the second factor into two parts, multiply each part, and add the products, using the distributive property without being asked to name it. Space Math Adventure has a full page of it, and the free Break-Apart Star Facts sample uses the same layout, breaking each factor into 5 and the rest.
Think: 7 × 8 is 7 × 5 = 35 and 7 × 3 = 21, so 35 + 21 = 56.
