Georgia Grade 3 math, Patterning & Algebraic Reasoning
Use multiplication and division to solve problems involving whole numbers to 100. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Justify solutions.
Element 3.PAR.3.7 of Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards (2021, effective SY2023-24), in the Patterning & Algebraic Reasoning strand. It sits under standard 3.PAR.3: Use part-whole strategies to solve real-life, mathematical problems involving multiplication and division with whole numbers within 100.
In the Division packet, students find the number each letter stands for, with the letter in every position, then write an equation with a letter for each story, solve it, and multiply to check. In Two-Step Problems and Time, every two-step problem has a multiplication or division step within 100: students solve the first step and use that answer to solve the second.
Think: 3 bags of 5 is 15, then 15 + 4 more is 19.
