3.NR.4.1 worksheets: unit fractions and building fractions from them

The standard

Describe a unit fraction and explain how multiple copies of a unit fraction form a non-unit fraction. Use parts of a whole, parts of a set, points on a number line, distances on a number line and area models.

Element 3.NR.4.1 of Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards (2021, effective SY2023-24), in the Numerical Reasoning strand. It sits under standard 3.NR.4: Represent fractions with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 in multiple ways within a framework using visual models.

What students practice

Students name the unit fraction for one shaded part, check that the parts are equal, count copies of a unit fraction to build a fraction like three fourths, and add unit fractions. The same idea moves to parts of a set, points on a number line, and jumps from 0, all below one whole, with denominators 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8.

Grade 3 Fractions: Unit Fractions and Number Lines

Pages 3 to 6, 8 to 10, 13, and 14 of 26 · $4

  • p. 3Name the Unit Fraction. Write the unit fraction for the shaded part of each shape.
  • p. 4Equal Parts Check. Circle yes if the shaded part is the fraction shown, or no if it is not.
  • p. 5Copies of a Unit Fraction. Count the shaded parts, then write the fraction they make.
  • p. 6Add Unit Fractions. Shade one part for each unit fraction, then write the total.
  • p. 8Parts of a Set. Write the fraction of each set that is shaded.
  • p. 9Points on a Number Line. Write the fraction for the dot on each number line.
  • p. 10Jumps on a Number Line. Start at 0, draw jumps of one part each, and mark a dot at the fraction.
  • p. 13Fraction Stories. Draw a model, then write the answer as a fraction.
  • p. 14Mixed Review. Read each section, then solve.

Think: 3 parts that are not equal, so the shaded part is not one third.
