What students practice
Students name the unit fraction for one shaded part, check whether the parts are equal, count copies of a unit fraction, and add unit fractions. Then they shade shapes, find fractions of sets, place points and draw jumps on number lines from 0 to 1, keep counting past 1, and write fractions for shapes with more than one whole shaded. Denominators are 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8 only, and sets have 24 or fewer objects.
What's inside
- p. 3
Name the Unit Fraction
Write the unit fraction for the shaded part of each shape.
- p. 4
Equal Parts Check
Circle yes if the shaded part is the fraction shown, or no if it is not.
- p. 5
Copies of a Unit Fraction
Count the shaded parts, then write the fraction they make.
- p. 6
Add Unit Fractions
Shade one part for each unit fraction, then write the total.
- p. 7
Shade the Fraction
Shade each shape to show the fraction.
- p. 8
Parts of a Set
Write the fraction of each set that is shaded.
- p. 9
Points on a Number Line
Write the fraction for the dot on each number line.
- p. 10
Jumps on a Number Line
Start at 0, draw jumps of one part each, and mark a dot at the fraction.
- p. 11
Past 1 on a Number Line
Count the equal parts from 0, then write the fraction for the dot.
- p. 12
More Than One Whole
Each shape is one whole, so write the fraction for all the shaded parts.
- p. 13
Fraction Stories
Draw a model, then write the answer as a fraction.
- p. 14
Mixed Review
Read each section, then solve.
Think: 6 equal parts and 1 is shaded, so the shaded part is one sixth.
Georgia standards covered
3.NR.4.1
Describe a unit fraction and explain how multiple copies of a unit fraction form a non-unit fraction. Use parts of a whole, parts of a set, points on a number line, distances on a number line and area models.
In this packet: pages 3 to 6, 8 to 10, 13, and 14. 3.NR.4.1 practice in all our packets
3.NR.4.3
Represent fractions, including fractions greater than one, in multiple ways.
In this packet: pages 7 and 11 to 14. 3.NR.4.3 practice in all our packets
Who it's for
Grade 3 classes starting fractions. Nothing here is compared or called equivalent yet, so it comes first; our second fractions packet, Compare and Equivalent Fractions, picks up from there.
