Georgia Grade 4 math, Numerical Reasoning
Represent whole numbers and fractions as the sum of unit fractions.
Element 4.NR.4.4 of Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards (2021, effective SY2023-24), in the Numerical Reasoning strand. It sits under standard 4.NR.4: Solve real-life problems involving addition, subtraction, equivalence, and comparison of fractions with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 100 using part-whole strategies and visual models.
Students name the fraction shaded on a bar and write it as a sum of unit fractions, such as 3 fifths as 1 fifth plus 1 fifth plus 1 fifth. Whole numbers get the same treatment: 1 and 2 wholes drawn as bars, a sharing story, a point at 1 on a 0 to 2 number line, and missing numerators. The Mixed Review comes back to it.
Think: 5 tenths and 3 tenths are 8 tenths, so the sum is 8 tenths.
