4th Grade Fractions Worksheets: Unit Fractions, Decomposing, and Adding and Subtracting Like Denominators

Fractions as sums of unit fractions, breaking fractions and mixed numbers apart two ways, and adding and subtracting like denominators on number lines and bars.

What students practice

Every fraction is a count of unit fractions. Students write fractions and whole numbers as sums of unit fractions, break a fraction or a mixed number apart in two different ways, then add and subtract with like denominators: jumps on number lines, shaded and crossed-out bars, wholes with wholes and parts with parts, and a jump to the next whole number first when a problem passes a whole. Three fraction stories, a self-checking code page, and a Mixed Review finish the packet.

What's inside

  1. p. 3

    Unit Fractions

Write each fraction, then write it as a sum of unit fractions.

  2. p. 4

    Wholes as Unit Fractions

Show each whole number as a fraction and as a sum of unit fractions.

  3. p. 5

    Break Apart a Fraction

Write each fraction as a sum in two different ways.

  4. p. 6

    Break Apart Mixed Numbers

Write each number as a sum in two different ways.

  5. p. 7

    Add on a Number Line

Start at the first fraction, jump forward, and write the sum.

  6. p. 8

    Subtract on a Number Line

Start at the first number, jump back, and write the difference.

  7. p. 9

    Add and Subtract with Bars

Shade more parts to add, or cross out parts to subtract, then write the answer.

  8. p. 10

    Wholes and Parts

Add or subtract the wholes, then the parts.

  9. p. 11

    Make a Whole

Jump to the next whole number first, then jump the rest of the way.

  10. p. 12

    Fraction Stories

Solve each story, then write the answer in the box.

  11. p. 13

    Fraction Code

Write each answer with its problem's denominator, then use the code to spell the word.

  12. p. 14

Use any strategy from this packet.

Strategy Spotlight from page 14, Mixed Review

Think: 5 tenths and 3 tenths are 8 tenths, so the sum is 8 tenths.

Who it's for

Grade 4 classes in the fractions unit. Denominators are 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12, every problem uses like denominators, and fractions are always stacked. Keys keep the problem's denominator and do not simplify; any equal form is correct. There is no regrouping procedure page and no fraction times a whole number.

See the format first, free. The free Grade 4 Math Sampler has one practice page from four units, each with its answer key.
