3.MDR.5.5 worksheets: estimate and measure weight, liquid volume, and length

The standard

Estimate and measure liquid volumes, lengths and masses of objects using customary units. Solve problems involving mass, length, and volume given in the same unit, and reason about the relative sizes of measurement units within the customary system.

Element 3.MDR.5.5 of Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards (2021, effective SY2023-24), in the Measurement & Data Reasoning strand. It sits under standard 3.MDR.5: Solve real-life, mathematical problems involving length, liquid volume, mass, and time and analyze graphical displays of data to answer relevant questions.

What students practice

Students estimate and then measure with a ruler, choose the unit that makes sense and put units in order of size, read scale dials in ounces and pounds, and read containers from cups to gallons. Story problems keep one customary unit throughout, so no conversion is ever needed.

Where to find it

  • p. 8Estimate, Then Measure. Circle your estimate, then use an inch ruler to measure each object.
  • p. 9Choose and Order Units. Circle the unit that makes sense, then number the units in order.
  • p. 10Read the Scale. Read each scale, then write the weight.
  • p. 11Read the Container. Read each container, then write how much liquid is inside.
  • p. 12Weight and Volume Stories. Draw a picture, then solve each problem.
  • p. 13Length Stories. Draw a picture, then solve each problem.
  • p. 14Mixed Review. Read each problem, then solve.

Think: guess about 3 inches; the ruler shows 3 and one fourth, so it is close.
