What students practice
True-size rulers print at 100 percent, so students read lengths to the whole, half, and quarter inch, then measure lines and draw lines with their own ruler. The second half estimates before measuring, chooses and orders customary units, reads scale dials in ounces and pounds, reads containers from cups to gallons, and solves weight, volume, and length stories that keep one unit the whole way through. There are no conversions and no metric units.
What's inside
- p. 3
Measure to the Inch
Read the ruler to find how long each object is, in whole inches.
- p. 4
Measure to the Half Inch
Read the ruler to find how long each object is, to the half inch.
- p. 5
Measure to the Quarter Inch
Read the ruler to find how long each object is, to the quarter inch.
- p. 6
Measure Each Line
Use an inch ruler to measure each line to the nearest quarter inch.
- p. 7
Draw a Line
Use an inch ruler to draw each line, starting at the dot.
- p. 8
Estimate, Then Measure
Circle your estimate, then use an inch ruler to measure each object.
- p. 9
Choose and Order Units
Circle the unit that makes sense, then number the units in order.
- p. 10
Read the Scale
Read each scale, then write the weight.
- p. 11
Read the Container
Read each container, then write how much liquid is inside.
- p. 12
Weight and Volume Stories
Draw a picture, then solve each problem.
- p. 13
Length Stories
Draw a picture, then solve each problem.
- p. 14
Mixed Review
Read each problem, then solve.
Think: the left end is at 0 and the right end is at 6, so it is 6 inches long.
Georgia standards covered
3.MDR.5.4
Use rulers to measure lengths in halves and fourths (quarters) of an inch and a whole inch.
In this packet: pages 3 to 7 and 14. 3.MDR.5.4 practice in all our packets
3.MDR.5.5
Estimate and measure liquid volumes, lengths and masses of objects using customary units. Solve problems involving mass, length, and volume given in the same unit, and reason about the relative sizes of measurement units within the customary system.

Who it's for
Grade 3 classes on rulers and customary units. Pages 6, 7, 8, and 14 need a real inch ruler; every other page is print-and-go. Student pages say weight, and the teacher page explains why Georgia's text says mass.
