What students practice
Students count unit lengths around shapes on a grid, add labeled sides on polygons with up to ten sides, use matching opposite sides on rectangles, and find a missing side from the perimeter. The second half compares rectangles: the same perimeter with different areas, the same area with different perimeters, two rectangles drawn on a grid, and which garden needs less fence. No formula is taught; every page adds the sides.
What's inside
- p. 3
Perimeter on a Grid
Count the unit lengths around each shape, then write the perimeter.
- p. 4
Add the Sides
Add the lengths of all the sides to find each perimeter.
- p. 5
Shapes with More Sides
Each shape has 7 to 10 sides, so add every side to find the perimeter.
- p. 6
Rectangle Sides Match
Write the missing side lengths, then find the perimeter.
- p. 7
Find the Missing Side
Use the perimeter to find the length of the side marked with a question mark.
- p. 8
Perimeter Stories
Draw and label a picture, then solve each problem.
- p. 9
Same Perimeter, New Area
Find the perimeter and area of each rectangle, then circle the greater area.
- p. 10
Same Area, New Perimeter
Find the perimeter and area of each rectangle, then circle the smaller perimeter.
- p. 11
Draw Two Rectangles
Draw two different rectangles on each grid, then fill in the table.
- p. 12
Which Uses Less Fence?
Find the area and perimeter of each garden, then circle the one with less fence.
- p. 13
Rectangle Stories
Draw both rectangles, then solve each problem.
- p. 14
Mixed Review
Read each problem, then solve.
Think: count every unit on the edges, so a 4 by 1 rectangle is 10 units.
Georgia standards covered
3.GSR.8.1
Determine the perimeter of a polygon and explain that the perimeter represents the distance around a polygon. Solve problems involving perimeters of polygons.
In this packet: pages 3 to 8 and 14. 3.GSR.8.1 practice in all our packets
3.GSR.8.2
Investigate and describe how rectangles with the same perimeter can have different areas or how rectangles with the same area can have different perimeters.
In this packet: pages 9 to 14. 3.GSR.8.2 practice in all our packets
Who it's for
Grade 3 classes finishing the length, perimeter, and area unit, ideally after our Area packet, since the 3.GSR.8.2 pages ask for both the perimeter and the area of each rectangle.
