Georgia Grade 3 math, Geometric & Spatial Reasoning

3.GSR.7.3 worksheets: area by multiplying length and width

The standard

Discover and explain how area can be found by multiplying the dimensions of a rectangle.

Element 3.GSR.7.3 of Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards (2021, effective SY2023-24), in the Geometric & Spatial Reasoning strand. It sits under standard 3.GSR.7: Identify area as a measurable attribute of rectangles and determine the area of a rectangle presented in real-life, mathematical problems.

What students practice

Rows and columns turn into repeated addition and then multiplication. Students multiply length by width in square inches, feet, and yards, find a missing side from the area, break a rectangle into two parts, add the areas of shapes made of two labeled rectangles, and solve area stories. Every side is 10 or less.

Where to find it

Grade 3 Area: Tiles, Rows, and Length x Width

Pages 7 to 11, 13, and 14 of 26 · $4

  • p. 7Rows and Columns. Count the rows, add the rows, then multiply to find the area.
  • p. 8Length × Width. Multiply the length by the width to find the area of each rectangle.
  • p. 9Find the Missing Side. Use the area and the side you know to find the missing side.
  • p. 10Break Apart a Rectangle. Find the area of each part, then add the parts to find the whole area.
  • p. 11Split and Add. Find the area of each part, then add to find the area of the whole shape.
  • p. 13Area Stories. Read each story, draw a rectangle if it helps, then solve.
  • p. 14Mixed Review. Read each section, then find each area or missing side.
Strategy Spotlight from Area, page 7

Think: 3 rows of 7 is 7 + 7 + 7 = 21, so 3 × 7 = 21 square units.
