Georgia Grade 3 math, Geometric & Spatial Reasoning

3.GSR.7.2 worksheets: area by tiling and counting

The standard

Determine the area of rectangles (or shapes composed of rectangles) presented in relevant problems by tiling and counting.

Element 3.GSR.7.2 of Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards (2021, effective SY2023-24), in the Geometric & Spatial Reasoning strand. It sits under standard 3.GSR.7: Identify area as a measurable attribute of rectangles and determine the area of a rectangle presented in real-life, mathematical problems.

What students practice

Students join tick marks to draw the unit squares themselves and then count, split shapes made of two rectangles on a grid and add the parts, and solve tile stories, drawing the tiles if it helps.

Where to find it

Grade 3 Area: Tiles, Rows, and Length x Width

Pages 5, 6, 12, and 14 of 26 · $4

  • p. 5Draw the Tiles. Join the marks to draw the unit squares, then count to find the area.
  • p. 6Shapes Made of Rectangles. Count the squares in each part, then add to find the area of the whole shape.
  • p. 12Tile Stories. Read each story, draw the tiles if it helps, then write the area.
  • p. 14Mixed Review. Read each section, then find each area or missing side.
Strategy Spotlight from Area, page 5

Think: join the marks to make 2 rows of 8 squares, so 16 square units.
