What students practice
Seven pages each teach one part-whole strategy for 4-digit addition and subtraction: add by place, jump forward, jump back, make a friendly number, count up to subtract, parts and whole, and group friendly numbers. One fluency page works within 1,000 with any strategy. Then a letter stands for the unknown, and two pages of story problems ask for an equation with a letter, a solution, and a check. There is no column algorithm anywhere in the packet; every strategy breaks the numbers into place value pieces.
What's inside
- p. 3
Add by Place
Add each place, then put the pieces back together.
- p. 4
Jump to Add
Jump by thousands, then hundreds, tens, and ones.
- p. 5
Jump Back to Subtract
Jump back by thousands, then hundreds, tens, and ones.
- p. 6
Make a Friendly Number
Make one number friendly, then add or subtract.
- p. 7
Count Up to Subtract
Count up from the smaller number to subtract.
- p. 8
Parts and Whole
Find the missing piece, then write the two equations.
- p. 9
Group Friendly Numbers
Add the friendly pair first, then add the last number.
- p. 10
Add and Subtract Within 1,000
Use any strategy, and show your thinking in the box below.
- p. 11
Letters for Unknowns
Find the number that each letter stands for.
- p. 12
Story Problems 1
Write an equation with a letter, solve it, then check.
- p. 13
Story Problems 2
Write an equation with a letter, solve it, then check.
- p. 14
Mixed Review
Read the sign on each problem first, then solve.
Think: 3,214 + 2,563 = 5,000 + 700 + 70 + 7 = 5,777.
Georgia standards covered
3.PAR.2.1
Fluently add and subtract within 1000 to solve problems.
In this packet: pages 10 and 14. 3.PAR.2.1 practice in all our packets
3.PAR.2.2
Apply part-whole strategies, properties of operations and place value understanding, to solve problems involving addition and subtraction within 10,000. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Justify solutions.
In this packet: pages 3 to 9 and 11 to 14. 3.PAR.2.2 practice in all our packets
Who it's for
Grade 3 teachers covering 3.PAR.2.2 who want strategy practice instead of a page of stacked problems, and homeschool families looking for 4-digit work that grows straight out of place value. It follows our Place Value to 10,000 packet.
