3.PAR.2.2 worksheets: add and subtract within 10,000 with part-whole strategies

The standard

Apply part-whole strategies, properties of operations and place value understanding, to solve problems involving addition and subtraction within 10,000. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Justify solutions.

Element 3.PAR.2.2 of Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards (2021, effective SY2023-24), in the Patterning & Algebraic Reasoning strand. It sits under standard 3.PAR.2: Use part-whole strategies to represent and solve real-life problems involving addition and subtraction with whole numbers up to 10,000.

What students practice

Every problem uses 4-digit numbers and nothing goes past 10,000. Students practice seven strategies (add by place, jump forward, jump back, make a friendly number, count up, parts and whole, and group friendly numbers), find the number a letter stands for, and turn story problems into an equation with a letter, solve it, and check it.

Where to find it

Grade 3 Add and Subtract to 10,000

Pages 3 to 9 and 11 to 14 of 26 · $4

  • p. 3Add by Place. Add each place, then put the pieces back together.
  • p. 4Jump to Add. Jump by thousands, then hundreds, tens, and ones.
  • p. 5Jump Back to Subtract. Jump back by thousands, then hundreds, tens, and ones.
  • p. 6Make a Friendly Number. Make one number friendly, then add or subtract.
  • p. 7Count Up to Subtract. Count up from the smaller number to subtract.
  • p. 8Parts and Whole. Find the missing piece, then write the two equations.
  • p. 9Group Friendly Numbers. Add the friendly pair first, then add the last number.
  • p. 11Letters for Unknowns. Find the number that each letter stands for.
  • p. 12Story Problems 1. Write an equation with a letter, solve it, then check.
  • p. 13Story Problems 2. Write an equation with a letter, solve it, then check.
  • p. 14Mixed Review. Read the sign on each problem first, then solve.
